WINNER: BEST NARRATIVE SHORT AT THE 2022 ROCKY MOUNTAIN EMMYS

"Sector 14" is a sci-fi project produced by Joseph Lara and Jared Cuellar for their Advanced Cinematography class. I designed the production from the ground up including set, costumes, and select props.

Set

For the set I wanted to create a space that looked like an underground maintenance tunnel. It was also important to me to make the space feel larger than it actually was, so to do that I designed the configuration of the set walls to look labyrinthine with turns and corridors. Set walls were painted to look like concrete through a combination of scumbling and spraying on texture with a hudson sprayer. The space was filled with PVC piping painted to look metallic and aged with small touches like grime hand painted on to the walls.

Costumes

For the costumes, I had to design around masks. At the time the script was written, mask mandates were still in effect so the story was written with masks in mind. The character of Juno was intended to look imposing and it was requested that I incorporate a full helmet into the costume. The jacket was sourced and the pauldron with cape was handmade. For the character of Cal, the mask was a customized airsoft mask, the jacket was hand painted, while the shirt and hood were both handmade. Other costume elements such as pants and shoes came from the actors' own wardrobes with a request from me for black items. I took inspiration from the Balmain Fall '22 RTW runway for the costumes by incorporating the techwear and tactical elements from it, as well as the way jackets heavily featured in the menswear line.
